Gun Stoppers

In 2017, Greensboro/Guilford Crime Stoppers launched the Gun Stoppers Initiative to help reduce crime involving illegal firearms in our community. The initiative focuses on encouraging anonymous tips about illegal firearms, including guns possessed by convicted felons or firearms believed to have been used in the commission of a crime.  When the program was launched, Greensboro/Guilford Crime Stoppers offered a $250 cash reward per illegal firearm recovered as a result of an anonymous tip.

Effective  September 30, 2026, the Gun Stoppers reward will increase to $500 per qualifying illegal firearm.

Crime Stoppers will pay a $500 cash reward for each illegal firearm recovered when the information provided leads to a felony arrest within Guilford County under the jurisdiction of the Greensboro Police Department or Guilford County Sheriff’s Office.  The maximum Gun Stoppers reward is $5,000 per tip.  As with all Crime Stoppers tips, information provided through the Gun Stoppers Initiative is 100% anonymous. If you know where an illegal gun is, tell us. Your information could help get illegal firearms off our streets—and you could earn a cash reward of $500 per illegal firearm, up to $5,000.

Today, that number has increased to an average of 35–80 illegal guns recovered annually. WHAT IS AN ILLEGAL GUN?

For purposes of the Gun Stoppers Initiative, an illegal firearm is generally a firearm that is possessed unlawfully or has been illegally modified.

A firearm is unlawfully possessed when it is in the control of a person who is prohibited by law from possessing a firearm.

Examples include, but are not limited to:

• Convicted felons
• Persons prohibited from possessing firearms by a court order, including certain domestic violence protective orders
• Fugitives from justice
• Persons prohibited from possessing firearms under federal or state law
• Parolees or other persons whose conditions of supervision prohibit firearm possession
• Persons dishonorably discharged from the U.S. Armed Forces

Illegal or Prohibited Firearms May Include:

• Sawed-off rifles or shotguns
• Machine guns or other unlawfully possessed automatic weapons
• Firearms equipped with illegal silencers
• Stolen firearms
• Firearms that have been illegally altered or modified from their original manufactured state
